The Science of Cute

I admit it.  I’m a LOLcat(lolrus, lolpuppy, etc) addict. I have the ICHC feed on my RSS reader ahead of all of the news, crafting, foodie, and gaming blogs I also read, and follow them on Twitter (As well as Sockington, the Twittering Cat).  I love cute, especially when it involves cats, and on the bad days I can load up one of these pictures and can’t help but smile. On the good days, they give me an extra giggle.

I have five lolcats of my very own, four in the house and one “Neighborhood Lolcat” who will show up on my front porch, one paw held up in a perfect pose of “It can be tuna tiem plz?”

It’s always amused me that no matter how much trouble you put to trying to come up with the perfect names for your pets, they inevitably get called something else.  Collectively, my cats are called “The Mews”, or occasionally by my mom “The Grand-kitties.”  Individually, they are known as Buggy Mew (who likes to eat bugs), Brother and Sister Mew (who are twins and alternate between inseparable and at war with each other), and Evil Mew. They have real names, of course, but these are the names that they have gained.

The stories of Evil Mew could make a novel alone, but though she’s not the friendliest of my cats (That title would go to the twins, who are essentially live-action plushies ready to be cuddled and squeezed), she is quite often the funniest.  She’s a horrendous klutz, and quite often that combines with her almost extreme curiosity to get her into some odd situations.

Review: Coraline

Anyone who knows me well knows that I have a deep appreciation for all things Neil Gaiman. His books are always among my favorites, well-read and dogeared, sometimes slightly chewed upon by the kitties.

He, along with Alan Moore, is one of the main reasons that I would love to see graphic novels more easily accepted as “literature.”

We went to see Coraline this weekend, something we’d been anticipating for quite some time.  I loved the book, which was wonderful and creepy and beautifully done, similar to an old-world fairy tale — you know, the ones that haven’t been sanitized and disney-ized to have all of the scary bits taken out?

The Boyfriend put on his “I Believe” shirt from Neverwear, so he even dressed up for the occasion! (This counts as proof that my geekiness is rubbing off on him…) There was no way we were going to miss this movie, even with both of us sick.

It was beautiful and amazing and utterly surreal. I know that I have the sound of a fangirl in my praise, but I recommend this movie even to people who’ve never heard of Neil Gaiman.  While I walked away from Stardust pleased but a little disappointed at the changes in the story, there was nothing disappointing about this adaptation.  The stop-motion puppet style of animation suited the story perfectly.  We were able to see it in 3D, too, and to see the “Other Mother” stretch out across the screen, seeming to arch out over the audience, sent shivers up my spine….

Definitely something that you should go see, and take your children to go see, if you haven’t.

Optimism

I have a happy.

Don’t really know why. Nothing’s different, nothing’s drastically changed. I did lose five pounds virtually overnight (*yay* even though I know it was mostly water…)

Last couple of days I’ve just been feeling really up and optimistic and awake.

I got the moleskines I ordered, and as usual, the nice, pristine blank pages always fill me with ideas of things to fill them up with. I don’t write terribly well in a notebook. I tend to find that my thoughts come too fast to keep up with my penmanship, so I prefer a computer when I get down to the actual writing. I do, however, love them for taking notes, and drawing, and just generally musing on things.

I’ve been writing a great deal lately, though nothing I’m ready to show anyone. Q10 is the most marvelous thing for keeping me focused on what I’m writing, even when I’m having a decidedly non-focusy day.
