From Page to Screen

I saw the Eragon trailer when we went to see Casino Royale. I wasn’t aware that there was actually an Eragon movie (or movie series) coming out. I fell in love with the series several years ago when I found the first book in a small bookshop in Jacksonville while attending a conference. (And, I admit, was rather jealous of the fact that a fifteen year old boy was writing better than me.)

Here and now, and Christopher Paolini is all grown up, working on the final installment of the trilogy (The first two are Eragon and Eldest) and his world will hit the big screen on December 15th. I wonder if the movies will do justice to the books. I certainly hope that they will. It’s been a while since there’s been a good dragon movie.

Also, speaking of dragon movies, I heard Peter Jackson has optioned Naomi Novik’s Temeraire series. It will be quite some time before they actually hit production, but I’m extremely excited about it. The books are a truly original take on the dragon tale, being set during the Napoleonic era with the dragons used as a sort of air force for the opposing French and English forces.

And Ms. Novik? She’s a gamerchick, which makes her seem even more a kindred spirit. She wrote for Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide. I wonder what she thinks of NWN2 (which I can’t play until I get a new computer)?

Reading her books makes me think I can, and will, manage to get one of my stories published one of these days.

Well, the month’s drawing to an end. I don’t think I’ll make my goal for Nanowrimo…but perhaps I’ll make it halfway. 25000 words. I’ve been searching for gifts for the ungiftable. Some people are just phenomenally difficult to shop for. My mother is easy, get her a pretty decoration for the house, or a useful appliance, and she’s happy, but what about everyone else?

I managed to get a huge amount of very nice novelty yarn at less than half what it usually costs, so a fair portion of my gift giving will consist of knitted scarves (because they’re fast and easy). Maybe I’ll even make the cats some sweaters…not that they’ll tolerate them well, but they have been wanting to snuggle up in the bed at night now that it’s gotten cold. Pippin, of course, monopolizes the prime spot, with his head tucked up under my chin, and the kittens curl up together in a giant pile of grey fuzz behind my knees.

So . . . what to get everyone? *grumbles and wanders off to search.*

Emerald Drama, Nanowrimo, and More!

Well, after a week of absolute hellish misunderstandings and drama on WoW, I can finally see the sun breaking through the clouds and am feeling a good bit better.

Final Fantasy XII came out this week. It looks awesome. That and Okami might just be what it takes to pull me away from my PC and actually buy a PS2. I need a clothes dryer a bit worse, though, and I must insist on waiting until the end of the month to do it, or I’ll never manage to do anything for Nanowrimo.

I tried to do the Nanowrimo (National Novel Writing Month) challenge last year, but found out about it when the month was already almost over, so I didn’t finish my story in time…I’m at about 1250 words on this year’s attempt. Harpalyce is attempting it as well, so I’ve challenged her to a word war in the hopes that the competition will spur the creative juices for both of us. Here’s our status so far (though she hasn’t updated her wordcount yet). I am Meadhbh, she is PlaidButterfly.

I’ll be keeping this on my sidebar so we can keep up with how we’re doing!

Also…in an odd sort of thing that stuck in my head…I walked into the bathroom this morning to find my oldest cat, Pippin, using the toilet. I wonder where he learned to do this…and if I can teach him to flush.
